If your unit fails inspection twice for the same issues, it will enter abatement starting on the 1st of the month following the second failed inspection. During abatement, the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) from the Housing Authority will be withheld.
Additionally, the owner and the participant will receive a lease/contract termination notice indicating the abatement start date and the termination date. This means that if the issues are not resolved promptly, the tenant's lease and the Housing Assistance Contract may be terminated, resulting in the tenant having to find alternative housing.
This process ensures that units meet the required Housing Quality Standards (HQS). For more details, please refer to the relevant HUD regulations, particularly 24 CFR ยง 982.404.
